Janu Muralitharan has bagged Best Emerging Helping Hands Award

Mrs. Janu Muralitharan is a young, energetic and one of the women leaders in the Humanitarian World. Janu owns and leads a voluntary social service humanitarian organization (in common terms: NGO) called “Local Initiatives for Tomorrow” (LIFT) where a numeric humanitarian projects are being implemented and countless people in suffering are benefitted.

Janu was born and bred as the eldest child with 3 siblings in Batticaloa District of the Eastern Province - Sri Lanka and completed her primary and secondary education at St. Cecilias Girls' School in Batticaloa.  She also studied Diploma in Social Sciences and English at the Open University of Sri Lanka and Technical college respectively.

Although she focuses on raising her two children as a full-time housewife since 2006, she was attracted towards the humanitarian service since 2015 as a result of witnessing her husband's profession and interest in humanitarian works.   

She started helping children and underprivileged families from the outskirts of the Batticaloa town by donating books, shoes and sanitary items. Later she recognized the need of a formally registered and structured organization to streamline the service to the needy people regardless of caste and religion. Therefore, she started leading the LIFT Ngo as the which was founded by her husband Muralitharan with the vision of “Every person in Batticaloa has the equal opportunity to achieve his/her fullest potential to live in a peaceful manner and contributing for better tomorrow”

Janu as a housewife and Executive Director of LIFT Ngo, balancing her duties and responsibility in both. Being a woman and playing a humanitarian leadership role is a good motivation for all other women. Therefore, Janu was recognized for her service by the family and society. Recently. On 29th of January 2022, Janu was awarded a certificate as one of the important women social workers in the Eastern province in the “Vanithabhimana 2021” competition. 

With Janu's dedication and leadership, many projects are being implemented by the LIFT NGO focusing on women & children, youth and persons with special needs in the Eastern Province.  Janu and her team making a difference and uplifting the lives of thousands of individuals through various programs such as education development, environmental development, safe immigration, sex education, coexistence, socio-economic development, and emergency assistance.

In this regard, Janu’s main duties as the Executive Director of LIFT are as follows.

• To lead the day-to-day operations of the organization and to provide advice to the departmentally appointed officers.
• Conducting weekly review meetings under her chairmanship to monitor project progress.
• Provide advice to project officers and field staff on how to deal with challenges, encourage them to improve their performance and talk to government officials when needed and provide necessary cooperation.
• Analyze humanitarian needs, design new programs, identify appropriate funding agencies, submit project proposals, and raise funds.
• Recruiting and training new employees and volunteers for the company.
• Maintaining contacts with government officials and donors and attending meetings.
• Preparation of project progress reports of the organization and submission to government departments and donors.
• Attending public events, field visits, meeting and discussing with beneficiaries.

Apart from all above, Janu spreads her wings into performing art too. Her interests and involvement in music, dance, acting and as a dubbing artist are also mentionable.

There is no doubt that giving this “Best Emerging Helping Hands Award” in Women Icon powered by Times Women under the category of Women’s NGO leadership Award to Janu will be a necessity of the times and a role model for many women.
