Overview

Hard work and dedication are the bedrock of every great achievement. Success is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution.

I, Niruba Sarath Jayasundara a Senior Lecturer in Linguistics (Gr I) in the Department of Department of Languages and Communication Studies, Faculty of Communication and Business Studies, Trincomalee Campus, Eastern University, Sri Lanka, started my career as Temporary Assistant lecturer, in the same institution in June 1998. I got my permanent appointment as a lecturer probationary in January 2000 and subsequently promoted as a senior lecturer Gr11 in 2006 and Gr1 in 2012. During my career I was appointed as the head to the department of Languages and Communication Studies for four times in 2006,2009, 2013 and 2015 and a senior student counselor for the entire campus  for two times in 2006 and 2010.

I obtained my undergraduate degree from University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka B.A., in Linguistics (Hons) in 1996 securing the Upper Second Class ,  my graduate degree from Annamalai University, India M.A., in Linguistics, First Class with Distinction in 2006  and my doctoral degree from Annamalai University, India in 2016.

I am the batch topper in my undergraduate study and awarded the university Prize (Thambiah Muthaliyar Chatram Trust) for the best performance in the special degree examination in Linguistics, University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka (academic year 1991/92, 1992/93, 1995/96)

And again I am  the batch topper in my graduate studies and  was honored with  an endowment  award (Dr. Agosthyalingam Endowment Award) for the best performance in Linguistics, Annamalai University, India (2005, 2006) and a gold medalist, Master of Arts in Linguistics, Annamalai University, India (2006)

I was bestowed with the Global Tamil Teacher Award in 2021, awarded by Global TamizhKappiya Research Institute Malaysia and International Tamizlkalvi research Institute, India.

In my profession, I am grateful to be an instrument in emerging the Department Study Programmes, being served as a foreign examiner for several PhD theses and as a member of advisory committees, editorial Boards, review panels for several journals, published and presented several research papers nationally and internationally and contributing 24 years of experience in teaching and research in linguistics and being an experienced academic administrator. 

This phenomenal award “distinguished Academician of the year” awarded by the women icon powered by Times Women is a significant milestone in my life. I am humbly thankful to the team who selected me qualified for this award. I extend my sincere gratitude for motivating me to continue having the highest level of dedication in my job.

I dedicate this prestigious award to my both parents  Mr.Selvanayagam  and Mrs. Rajeswary Selvanayagam and to my one and only loving sister,  Mrs. Kavitha Devarajan, the real motivators and pillars of my educational path, always encouraging and supporting me to achieve the heights in my education and profession.

I sincerely remember my colleagues and my Rectors for their genuine support and contribution to achieve these pinnacles in my career. My special gratitude always goes to my Rectors Rev. Dr. C. P. Rajendram and Prof N. Nagendrakumar for their immense support, motivation and confidence on me as a colleague and as an employer. I am privileged to be a colleague of such great inspirations who made me to climb in the ladder of success and I am forever grateful to them. 

I am grateful to my teachers from the primary secondary and to higher education. I am extremely blessed with wonderful teachers throughout my educational path which is the crucial reason for all my achievements. I humbly remember my research guide and my teacher Prof. M. Sivashammugam a true inspiration of my successes.

I sincerely thank my one and only daughter Madumitha  Jaysundara  who always delighted to see my achievements and my husband Sarath Jayasundara  for being a constant supporter in my educational and career attainments.

It is a great honor for me to receive this special award “distinguished Academician of the year” and this is an incredible moment for me and I humbly accept the commendation. Once again I express my heartfelt delight to all that enabled me to achieve this goal.
