Overview

It’s a great pleasure to receive the title of “Young Lifetime Achiever” under the category of “Women Achiever Awards” on global level with Women Icon awards powered by Times Women. It was truly honored to receive the news that I have selected with above mentioned award tittle. I was so excited to see my name as one of the awardees in Women Icon 2022.

I am Dasuni Naynthara Jayarathne a communication lecturer by profession in Eastern University Sri Lanka. I am the eldest daughter of my family where my father and mother had a very busy schedule as they both were working in government positions. Therefore, from my childhood I have started to do all my work alone and being able to manage the household chores at the age of 13. The proper guidance of my parents helped me to create the person whom I am today. I have studied in Rathanasiri K.V, a village school in my home town till grade 5 and entered to Scared Heart Convent for my secondary education with passing the national grade five scholarship examination. During my secondary school time I was always being among top 5 students in class with doing many extracurricular activities such as debating, announcing and music. I have participated many district and national level competitions as well in debating, handwriting, short story writing and recitation. I have received awards in district level best debater and short story writer. I have passed Ordinary Level National Examination with 8 ‘A” s and started my advanced level in Arts stream. After getting good results in national advanced level, I got selected to do my bachelors degree in Mass Media in University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. During my undergraduate studentship I have created a vision for my life to be a unique graduate. From my first year I have started to have a depth study about mass media. Therefore, I have started to work during my studentship in different media channels as radio presenter, producer, dubbing artist, script developer and marketing coordinator. When I was passing out in 2016 I had almost 3 years working experiences in industry. Further I have represented Sri Lanka in several international conferences and student seminars in different countries such as China, India, Germany, France, Turkey, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. I had a hobby of creating short movies, documentaries during that time and I went to Cambodia alone to create a documentary about their development so far. I always wanted to experience other cultures, traditions and I started to read the people and society parallel with book reading. As I had the ambition of being a unique graduate, I have completed my bachelor’s degree with second class upper division with all above experiences and exposures.

Then I got selected soon after my graduation as executive marketing in MTV Channels pvt. While I was working there, I kept my first step towards higher education teaching with becoming a visiting academic in Sri Lankan Open University. When I was working weekdays in MTV and Weekends in Open University, I have created some space to post graduate diploma in Marketing in Sri Lankan Institute of Marketing. While I was working, I received full scholarship to do my Masters in my favorite study stream of Business Administration in Zhejiang Normal University, China. Then I went to China in 2016, September to continue my Masters degree. This time period can remember as the best time in my life where I received the high global exposure. I was the only Sri Lankan student among 120 international students from 80 other countries. I always believed myself and had good confident with my skills, talents and attitudes. Though it was completely a new study stream to me with my dedication I received top 3 results in my first semester of masters. Further I took part in many international competitions. In international market survey competition, I won 2nd place, international business incubation- 2nd place and Internet plus provincial competition bronze medal.  The biggest achievement was being selected as top 10 business plan makers in national MBA competition in China. I was the only international student winner. I brought honor as Sri Lankan to my master’s university in China. Later on, I have appointed as director mass media in international student fraternity and got promoted as the president of the international student Fraternity “SIGMA” with high number of votes of the international student committee. Therefore, I have worked for the collaborative events of Chinese students and international students, organizing business trips for international students, organizing different competitions such as photography competition etc. I was also appointed as the assistant to MBA dean in College of Economics and Management. I have received the most outstanding student award with scholarship in Zhejiang Normal University with my top academic results and extra work, out of 120 international students. I believe I brought honor to my country as a young woman.

Later on, I got selected to work to international trade sector in China. That gave me a huge experience to learn about the international trade in one of China’s top 10 cleaning products company. Further, I also worked as foreign teacher in China as the one and only non-native teacher. These all varnished my carrier with plenty of experiences. Then one of the Chinese apparel companies selected me as an industrial engineer to work there permanently. But my desire was to serve back to my country even for a short time period.

Then I came back to Sri Lanka, I wanted to start my own business and it was a dream. But at the same moment I got selected to work as academician in University of Colombo in my same department where I had my bachelor’s degree. When I was teaching there, I got selected with full scholarship to attend the summer camp in Wuhan University China as a Sri Lankan representator.

In 2019 I have received the full government scholarship to do my doctorate in the number one university in China for communication studies. Therefore, I went China again in 2019 to start read my Phd. Then I had to come back in year 2020 and I have started my own business called “Kosala Bungalow restaurant and catering” as it was one of my dreams. While operating my own business I was reading my PhD. In the Year of 2021, I got selected as Lecturer in Department of Languages and Communication Studies. Currently I am the author of three books, 25 research papers and articles. But research is my passion and I am continuing the community researches related to social media, public diplomacy, media management and marketing communication. With all these experiences I have started to share my knowledge in different national and international medias as well.

Currently I am waiting for the completion of my PhD as one of the youngest PhD holders in subject arena as well as the first PhD holder in international communication in Sri Lanka. The journey was not at all easy but it all happened with confident and dedication. Women should understand their power and strength because it had no end. My advice to all the women never gives up on your dreams fight for yourself and contribute your maximum to make the world as a better place. Because it will cause for a peaceful sleep at end!!
