Priyanka Chandrarathne has bagged Excellent Young woman leadership award

Priyanka Chandrarathne is a Senior Lecturer attached to the Department of Insurance & Valuation, Faculty of Business Studies & Finance, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. She has completed B.Sc. (Special) Degree in Insurance and Valuation and Master of Business Administration from the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka and now reading for Ph.D. in the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University of Sri Lanka.

In her final year of the university, she joined the AVIVA NDB Insurance Company as a trainee. After that, she joined Janashakthi Insurance Company as a Senior Insurance Underwriter. That is her first job and got experience in the industry as an insurance professional until she came to this profession in 2012.

During her 10 years of academic life, she held various positions at the Department level, Faculty level as well as University level.

As the Head of the Department, she has worked really hard by sacrificing her time and effort towards the betterment of the Department, and the Department has achieved remarkable growth in every aspect. As a young leader, she set an example with an amazing leadership style while cultivating the family concept in the Department. The bond she developed among the team as the leader is admirable.

Further, she provided her service to the Faculty in various aspects while being a Student Counselor of the Faculty of Business Studies & Finance (2020-2021), an Academic Advisor for the students of the Faculty of Business Studies and Finance, and as the member of Faculty Postgraduate Committee, Faculty Curriculum and Academic Development Committee, Faculty Internal Quality Assurance Committee, Faculty Higher Degree Committee, Committee on Developing Faculty Policy Document, Faculty Student Staff Liaison Committee, Faculty teaching and learning Committee, Resource person recommendation committee (AHEAD), Activity 02 of the AHEAD Project, Journal Publication Committee (ARSYM – 2020), Fund Raising Committee (ARSYM - 2017, 2018, Economic forum 2019), Inaugural and Hospitality Committee (ARSYM 2018, Economic forum 2019). As well as, she contributed to the Wayambin Deyata Exhibition in 2019 as the Department Coordinator and member of the Logistics Committee.

Her teaching and research interest are in the field of Risk Management and Insurance. She also worked as an Editorial Board Member, Journal of Insurance and Finance, Reviewer of the ARSYM (2017,2018,2020), Faculty of Business Studies & Finance, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, Reviewer of the SACFIRE (2021) Student Journal of the Department of Accountancy, Faculty of Business Studies & Finance, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, Reviewer of the 7th Symposium of Accounting and Finance Research (SACFIRE 2021) of the Department of Accountancy, Faculty of Business Studies & Finance, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, Reviewer for the 17th ICBM 2020 of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

She was a good player in her school time as well as in the university, especially in Net Ball, and won the university colors for Netball. So, apart from teaching and research activities, provide her service to the university sports as a Member of the Sports Advisory Board of WUSL since 2016. Further, she proved her capabilities in sports as Event Coordinator for Netball - SLUG 2016, and while being a member of the Organizing Committee, Invitation Committee, and Awarding and Victory Committee of the SLUG 2016.

Ms. Priyanka provided her service to the external students engaged in the insurance industry while performing as the Director (2021-2022), Academic Coordinator (Intake VIII, Intake IX, Intake 10), Secretary (Intake VI), and member of the teaching panel of the Diploma in Risk Management & Insurance and Higher Diploma in Risk Management & Insuranceprogrammes.In addition, she provided her service at the national level as a member of the Specialist Committee and Technical Evaluation Committee on Suraksha Insurance Scheme 2020.

Apart from her academic life, she maintains a great balance in her personal life while being a good wife to her husband and a great mother to two kids.

During her career, she never received an international award. She is very proud of winning the title of the ‘Excellent Young Women Leadership Award’ from Women Icon powered by the World Women Council and affiliated with Times Women.

No matter how life is hard, she enjoys her life and keeps a smile on her face.
