Ayubowan, My name is  Omaththage Inoka Udani Perera from the beautiful island of Sri Lanka, I am the founder and the Principal of “Your English Specialist (Y.E.S.) School of English”, Institute.

Firstly, my heartfelt thanks to Women Icon powered by Women Times and World Women’s Council for electing me as the “Outstanding Teacher 2023”, at the time I am completing 18 years of teaching in English. There is no denying that this priceless award will make me walk that extra mile, with more confidence and energetically, to uplift the language skills of the younger generation.

Being the only child, in a conservative family, had both my primary and secondary education at Musaeus College, Colombo-7. Throughout Schooling, I was an outstanding student, annually bagging 1^st class certificates, various subject prizes  and obtaining the best results  at GEC Ordinary Level public examination. Though I got selected for medicine, gave up that idea as my father was reluctant to send me abroad, hence started my career as a banker at a foreign bank after completing a Banking Course with flying colours.

I obtained a Diploma in Applied Banking and Finance ( IBSL), Diploma in Computer Programming, Diploma in Credit Management , Diploma in Basic French (First Class) at the Department of Official Languages, Diploma in Speech and Drama, Gold Medal Level in Speech and Drama  with distinction from London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), an MBA from City University of America (USA) and started reading a PhD from IUA London,(UK).  I was also a marking examiner of Business Communication at the Institute of Charted Accountants for a few years, was an associate member of the Institute of Credit Management and currently following a Higher Diploma in Counseling Psychology.

With the birth of my only daughter, I moved to the Education Sector which was the turning point of my life. I was privileged to be the Principal of several popular International Schools, completed many trainings successfully in Cambridge International Primary Programme , Classroom Management, Collaborative Learning, Learner Styles, Worksheet and Material Designs ,Teaching English Literature, Bringing Grammar to Life in the Secondary Classroom organized by Hornby Schools and achieved an extensive knowledge of the language of international communication. With my hands on experience I, realized that majority of students lack proper knowledge of English to express themselves. 

With that in mind, my brainchild, “Your English Specialist (Y.E.S)”, School of English was founded in the year 2004, with only four students.  This small step was taken with the intention of making a real difference in the lives of students who yearn to learn English. Now it is a successful renowned Institute located in Kaduwela, suburbs of Colombo city. I can proudly mention that my students have reached great heights in Written English, Creative Writing, Spoken English, Public Speaking and in Effective Communication examinations. 

Each and every individual is given special attention by myself and I train them to develop a love for texts and overcome shyness and nervousness when communicating through the spoken word. The use of correct grammar and pronunciation support them to build up self-confidence. Various language related activities done in class, empower the learner to bring out the best and achieve their goals. At the same, I believe in human values and discipline, therefore have provided an environment for the students of different religions and communities to study unitedly.

I take this opportunity to thank Dr. Walter Mswaka , a prominent educationalist , in both the UK and USA,  for being the consultant of my institute right throughout,  guiding me wisely with entrepreneurship and the language.

My advice to all women across the world is to be genuine and sincere in whatever task they do - grow through what you go through, then definitely, can conquer the dreams.
