Biography of Iris Zemza  Nozizwe  Mhlanga of Nozizwe Mother of Nations Trust

Introduction

The Nozizwe Mother of Nations Trust, founded by Iris Zemza Nozizwe Mhlanga in 2018, is a beacon of hope and support for vulnerable communities in Zimbabwe. The Trust's mission is to assist individuals in need, including people with disabilities, widows, orphans, and the homeless, by providing essential services such as food, medical care, education, and psychosocial support. This biography delves into the origins, impact, and future aspirations of the Trust, as well as the personal journey of its founder, who is set to receive the prestigious Women Icon 2025 Award powered by Women Times.

Early Life and Inspiration

Nozizwe Mhlanga, whose name fittingly translates to "mother of nations," was born into a family deeply committed to philanthropy. Her father, Jonathan Themba Mhlanga, was a well-known philanthropist and former president of the Highlanders Football Club, while her mother was the first black secretary at the Chronicle Newspaper in Bulawayo. Growing up in such an environment, Nozizwe was instilled with the values of compassion and community service from a young age.

Founding of the Trust

The inception of the Nozizwe Mother of Nations Trust was inspired by a profound personal experience. In 2018, two years after her father's passing, Nozizwe encountered a homeless disabled man who had collapsed from hunger. This encounter, coupled with a prophetic message she received in church, spurred her to take action. She shared her experience on social media, which garnered a significant response from the community, leading to the establishment of the Trust.

Mission and Activities

The Nozizwe Mother of Nations Trust operates with a clear mission: to uplift and empower vulnerable individuals in Zimbabwe. The Trust provides a range of critical services, including:

  • Food Distribution : Regular meal distributions to vulnerable communities in Bulawayo, Tsholotsho, and Harare, often in collaboration with other organizations
  • Medical Assistance : Provision of medical care and support to those in need, including access to medication and healthcare services.
  • Educational Support : Assistance with school fees, educational materials, and other resources to ensure that children from disadvantaged backgrounds can pursue their education.
  • Psychosocial Support : Offering counseling and emotional support to individuals dealing with various challenges.

Impact and Recognition

Since its founding, the Nozizwe Mother of Nations Trust has made a significant impact on the lives of over 5,000 beneficiaries. The Trust's efforts have been recognized both locally and internationally, with Nozizwe receiving numerous awards for her philanthropic work. These accolades include 45 international awards, two honorary degrees, and a fellowship under Eudoxia International University.

Challenges and Resilience

Despite its successes, the Trust faces several challenges, including a lack of access to medication, legal documentation issues, and donor fatigue. However, Nozizwe's resilience and the support of the community have enabled the Trust to continue its vital work. The majority of donations are in-kind, with corporate sponsors and private well-wishers contributing clothing, bedding, and other essential items.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, the Nozizwe Mother of Nations Trust aims to expand its reach and impact. Plans include increasing the number of beneficiaries, enhancing the scope of services provided, and strengthening partnerships with other organizations to better serve vulnerable communities.
