Overview

“In giving, we receive” is my noble vision in life. Hence, I work  and serve to fulfill this vision in life! To start with I consider it a  privilege to express my gratitude to the members of the team,  “Times Woman and woman Icon Award committee Jury, by  shortlisting me after several interviews as an awardee under the  section Women Leadership excellence, “BEST ACHIEVER AWARD” as an innovative achiever for my effort. Thereby a  new vision and fresh enthusiasm has been infused in me.

Coming to my profile, I’m Mrs. Mariya Jeyantha Umashangar  and I hail from Trincomalee, SriLanka. My little town is quite  popular globally because of its natural harbour. Besides, Trincomalee is home for a rich multicultural society. They are  the Tamils, Sinhalese, Muslims and Burghers. They have their  different religious festivals.

I was educated at St.Mary’s College in Trincomalee. My school  life was one of great innovative experiences. It is unforgettable.  Enjoyed learning, playing and even singing and dancing.

Even as a student I joined the Peace community in the E.H.E.D  Caritas and was an active member in all social activities held by  the committee. Most of my youth I have spent in charitable  projects held for the senior citizens in homes and institutions.

I completed my G.C.E A/L in 2003 and started my computer  and English Literary classes. I am indeed grateful to all my  teachers who guided me and encouraged me in this career. This  was a strong avenue to start the speech classes only in the town but also in outstations where the children do not have access to  such social enrichment through English Speech and Drama  classes. I joined The Institute for Examination in English, Music  & Speech (I.E.M.S) and sent up students for their examinations  in 2011. This paved the way to join the British Academy and  became a member in the Society of Teachers in Speech &  Drama, London, U.K.

Meanwhile I prepared students to participate in the British Art  Festival performing Arts conducted by adjudicator Dr.John  Beilby every year.

Thus far I have received almost 98 gold medals and trophies. By  the way I have also qualified myself in Eastern and Western  Dancing. Here too I have a group who participate in public  performances.

It is indeed an added talent that I could also involve myself in  Sports. I have encouraged my 2 daughters to follow likewise and  both my children are quite interested in English, Drama, music,  swimming, baseball, volleyball, football, Hockey, and athletics.

My children aged 14 Priyanka and 13 Swarnikka are also very  musical. They are taught to compete at ceremonies and events  conducted in my “Green Tree” Preschool and on the other  occasions I love them as I do for all children and they too by  their loyalty and love return love for love.

Incidentally the long Covid 19 pandemic vacation contributed to  uplift myself intellectually. I have qualified myself and

completed my Diploma in Teachers’ Associate Recital in Verse  and Prose and TKT Cambridge Examination and also had the  graceful chance to face the online examination in TEFL.

My career Mission:

“How beautiful are the feet of those, who preach the good news”  (Bible)

Your brilliant future begins here!

Teaching is a sacred vocation. Subsequently, among my  unforgettable experiences commencing with my “GREEN TREE” English Academy and Preschool which I started in 2011 and  2017 stands out as the first. As an efficient teacher, I never  stopped learning. I always continue to learn with creative vision”  Carl Roger puts it beautifully, “One who has learnt, how to  learn, is a learned person” Presently I have nearly 42 students  and Three teachers.

However, my career as a teacher makes me give of myself in  several categories to my children. First and foremost as a  “Mother” – one who shows care, Love and Yearns for them.  Through the care-centred ways, I was able to draw out their  hidden strengths. Discover their potentials and in that light, I  was enabled to point out future goals.

Secondly, a friend and guide pointing out to the right direction in  and through all the activities inspire the students until they  realize their vision in life.

Outreach programmes are arranged to participate in sports and  games. It gives them team spirit and discipline.

Finally, teaching gives me joy since I have learnt to serve with  love. It has always been a rewarding experience, “In giving you  Receive.” Is my vision in life.

I was awarded the International Best Preschool Award 2019  held in Chandigarh, India and I am grateful to the Association. The Annual Programme for the English Academy, Preschool  Tots and the Daycare Kids were held regularly. Some of the  activities were invited to be presented at the Awarding  Ceremonies held at B.M.C.H Colombo by the Institute for  examinations in English, Music and Speech.

This experience helped my students to develop their talents and  widen their knowledge.

Basically I believe a socially responsible person is the  foundation of a good society. As such I have good rapport will  all my teachers and parents. They work shoulder to shoulder  with the institution, where we work and serve.

Furthermore Most importantly your choice of me for the Best  Achiever Award has brought a fresh wave of Hope into my life  nay into my family, kith and kin. How eventful it is! In  return I not only thank you and your globally prestigious  committee but pray to the Lord for His nearness to you and bless  you in all your endeavors. Thank you.
